View our Extended Tours
- In Search of King Arthur
The myths and legends of King Arthur are inextricably linked to the South West of England.
The town of Glastonbury abounds with Arthurian connections; at the abbey ruin a grave was uncovered which was claimed to be King Arthur. Glastonbury, historic Avalon, is suggested to be the resting place of the Holy Grail. Also in Somerset is Cadbury Castle - could this be Camelot?
Beyond Somerset we travel through Devon to reach Cornwall and the Tintagel area. We will explore the Arthurian legends and sites connected with other characters (such as Tristan and Iseult).
This is one of our specialist areas and as well as the legends we can take you through the latest archaeological research of Dark-Age history in Cornwall.
- The Last Kingdom - King Alfred's Wessex
The historic Saxon Kingdom of Wessex found itself standing alone against the Danish invaders after all the other Anglo Saxon kingdoms had collapsed and surrendered.
This epic conflict has been described in the novels of Bernard Cornwell which have been turned into a popular TV drama.
Wessex itself consists of parts of modern-day Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset and Devon.
We will visit sites with very strong links to the real battles and events of this turbulent period and focus on some of the characters such as Alfred the Great. We shall visit the Somerset Levels around Glastonbury, the Saxon town of Wareham, Winchester and the site of Alfred's decisive victory at Ethandun.
- 2020 In the footsteps of Pilgrims - Mayflower 400
In 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers headed across the Atlantic to flee religious persecution, landing on the coast of Massachussetts. The rest, as they say, is history but their departure from England was not straightforward.
2020 marks the 400th anniversary of this remarkable event.
There are pilgrim connections in London, Southampton, Dartmouth and Plymouth.
We shall meet in London and exolore the Mayflower connections before heading westward to visit Southampton, the original setting off point, and visit historic sites before once again heading west and visit th lovely harbour town of Dartmouth in Devon (as did the Pilgrims). From Dartmouth we will make the relatively short journey to Plymouth. Again in the footsteps of the Pilgrims.
We will spend plenty of time in Plymouth to explore streets that would still be recognisable to the Pilgrims and a number of places where they were lodged bfore their final departure.
.
We will also take time to discover some of the remarkable maritime history of Plymouth.
This tour can be adapted to individual guests' requirements, but would take in a minimum of one night in London,as well as stays in Dartmouth and Plymouth.
- The Great West Way
An exciting new touring route, just launched, which stretches from East to West from London to the seafaring city of Bristol.
The Great West Way follows the line of the original coaching road from London westwards (itself based upon a Roman road). The old road was designed to pick out the centres of population and now gives wonderful access to interesting market towns and picturesque villages. The road west has been superseded by the modern motorway, so the Great West Way is never too busy.
Highlights of the Great West Way include; Windsor with its famous castle, Hungerford, Marlborough with its famous private school (alumni include the Duchess of Cambridge - our future Queen), the Georgian City of Bath and Bristol itself.
We're happy to travel east to west too.

Family history, local history and stunning scenery, what could be better?
- Film Locations of the South West
From 'Poldark' to 'Doc Martin'. From 'Pride and Prejudice' to 'War Horse'. From 'Harry Potter' to 'Doctor Doolittle'.The South West has provided the locations for many blockbuster movies and well-known TV dramas and not all of them are where you would expect them to be.
Almost always, the location is as interesting for its own sake as its role as a film set.
From time to time we are involved with film crews, so we do have a few insights. If you're lucky, filming may be taking place at one of the locations during your visit.
This three day tour will take in locations in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.
As always we can recommend accommodation options and book it for you if you would like us to.
